Progressive Dental (Conklin Office) - spring/fall/summer
Agency Description: Progressive Dental is a modern, busy multiple doctor dental office. We provide all aspects of dentistry to our patients including: surgery, orthodontics, cosmetic dentistry, root canal therapy, crown and bridge, dental implants, preventative care and a full range of services for children.
Placement Title 1: Dental Practice Intern
Placement Description - Students will begin by observing all phases of the practice. Students will then be involved in patient care and management as well as instrument sterilization, operatory set up and clean up, patient education and assisting the doctor with some procedures.
Qualification Required: Intern candidates should have hepatitis B vaccinations and be friendly and hard working. Candidate should be interested in dentistry.
Documented proof of Hepatitis B three series shot is required.
Skills Acquired: Observation of a myriad of complex dental procedures, an understanding of day to day dental practice and patient care.
Placement Title 2: Dental Assistant
General Objectives: Intern is responsible for assisting the dentist in the clinical treatment of patients.
Specific Objectives:
Office Management
* Check to ensure that units are ready, stocked and clean at the beginning of each appointment.
* Oversee cleanliness of operatory.
* Help in other areas of the office when necessary (phones, unpacking supplies, moving dismissed patient records.)
Patient Management
* Greet Patients when they sign in and monitor arrival time.
* Seat patients and have proper setup for procedures.
* At all times show care and concern for patients.
* Try not to leave your patient unattended in the chair.
* Observe taking and developing of diagnostic x-rays
* Take preliminary impressions for study casts and occlusal registrations for mounting study casts.
* Pour, trim and polish study casts, fabricate temporary crowns, and bridges
* Anticipate and assist dentist's needs at all times
* Chart all patients record date, service rendered, and any charge
* Escort patients from the treatment room
* Complete patient's chart indicating procedure done today and check to see if there is any remaining treatment or if the patient needs a cleaning and if necessary make the patient an appointment before escorting to the front desk.
* Perform clinical procedures as New York State allows.
* Give patient instruction and demonstrate where necessary.
* Monitor patient flow
* Update patient health history at every visit and patient information
* Perform other tasks as assigned by the dentist.

* Promote team concept by interacting with other in the office.

* High school diploma
* Legible handwriting for notations in patient chart; computer skills desired

Dental Clinic Intern - Work directly with dentist and staff. Assist with preparation of room for patients. Participate in sterile processing of equipments.
Requirements to Intern: The New York State Health code now requires that all volunteers who have patient contact must have a physical. This is given free of charge at the hospital. ACRYLIC NAILS CANNOT BE WORN DURING THIS INTERNSHIP.
