CROW is a non-profit and rehabilitation center providing care for native and migratory wildlife on the Gulf Coast of Southwest Florida. CROW's fully equipped wildlife hospital admits over 3400 patients per year including 170 different species of birds, mammals and reptiles. The goal of wildlife rehabilitation is to return injured or orphaned wild animals back to the wild.

Placement Title: Natural Science Extern.

Placement Description: All externs participate with the staff in the daily activities of the rehabilitation center. Externs are supervised by a full-time veterinarian and participate in many aspects of the center's work. Emphasis is placed on the natural science student gaining and understanding of the entire rehabilitation process from admittance through release. Morning activities focus on cage cleaning, diet preparation, and baby-care. Patient admittances with concurrent diagnostics tend to occur in the afternoons. Facility upkeep and care of nocturnal patients complete each day's agenda. Please be aware that medical procedures are a small, albeit critical, part of the rehabilitation process for each patient and that a large portion of the work at any rehabilitation facility involves feeding and cleaning.

Qualifications: Previous experience handling animals can be helpful but is not a requirement. Students should have an interest in learning more about the field of wildlife rehabilitation.

Skills:
Students learn the basics of wildlife rehabilitation, including housing requirements, treatment goals, and information about zoonotic disease and disease transmission. Tasks include observations, cage cleaning, diet preparation, basic handling skills, communication with peers, supervisors and the public.

Islip Town Board
Students will assist the members of the Islip Town Board as a Legislative Intern. The Islip Town Board is a legislative body empowered by the New York State Constitution to enact legislation, approve the Town budget, levy Town taxes and provide local services. The principal function of the Town Board is to regulate land-use within the Town and to promote and protect the health, safety and general welfare of Islip residents.

Placement Description: Students will report directly to elected officials serving as their representative to their constituents. Their duties will include, but not be limited to , intake, monitoring and follow up of case work assisting constituents creating and keeping up-to-date calendar, typing of various correspondence, filing and answering telephones.
